June 14th is more than Flag Day in our house ... it's my Mom's birthday. For years she had us convinced that alll the flags were for her! She gone but I do really have a fun time and a day filled with memories on June 14th! So ... happy birthday Mom and Happy Flag Day to you all!
June 14th is Flag Day! It’s the day we commemorate the adoption of the stars and stripes as the national symbol of the nation!
The star spangled banner was last modified in 1958. That’s the year that Alaska and Hawaii were awarded statehood, and the number of white five pointed stars on the blue field was increased to fifty.
Although it is not a federal holiday, Flag Day is still important. It reminds us that our national ensign is more than a pretty collection of red, white and blue stars and stripes.
It is the symbol of our country, and it is revered by citizens and allies, and feared by our foes!
And to Francis Scott Key, who penned the question in 1814:
O say, does that star-spangle banner yet wave
o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
The answer is an emphatic “YES!”
